Colombo - Today, Sri Lanka's independence day is to commemorate the 64th year. Sri Lankan president, Mahinda Rajapakse also grant amnesty to 1414 narapinda in the country.
However, President Rajapakse decided to grant amnesty only to the inmates who received light sentences. Similarly, as delivered by Justice officials and reported by the local office of the AFP on Saturday (04/02/2012).
Rumors had circulated among the local media, that President Rajapakse will use this moment of independence day to forgive his political opponents, Sarath Fonseka. However, the name of a former Commander Fonseka Sri Lankan army, was not recorded in the list of inmates who were given amnesty.
Fonseka who lost the presidential election battle in January 2010, was arrested on charges of slandering the brother of President Rajapakse ordered the killing of Sri Lanka to the rebels. Fonseka was arrested just two weeks after his defeat in the presidential elections and later sentenced to three years in prison.
